Fish Dissection
|
Day 11
Today, we started with our run, swim, run, swim, run, swim (etc.) morning exercise, followed by 8-minute abs led by Susie with the Bahama Mamas and Pete. After breakfast and chores, the Crusty Conchs had a fish dissection lab while the Fish and Chips went diving at Stubbs. During the morning fish dissection of Lane Snappers, we all carefully cut apart the fish to not ruin the present inside. Blaire and Erika’s fish, the only male fish of the group, started squirting blood when they tried to get out the gills, Alex and Dori refused to touch the fish, and Coleman watched Erin tear the fish apart, saying he had already dissected a fish before and he didn’t need to touch it. After dissecting, we finger painted the other side of the fishes, and printed them on white T-shirts, which we decorated with puffy paint. If youe expecting a present, this is probably it. For some of us, this just meant we finally had a clean T-shirt again (even if a dead bleeding fish had just touched it)! The fish and chips during all this decided to look at fish rather than cut them up and put them on shirts. We rode down the Marina, where Kaely’s chain broke and had to be towed in by Hank. Daryl (the guy at the marina) dove with us for the first time. As Archy showed everyone underwater a huge crab, Daryl decided to pick it up; it made a hissing type noise and freaked people out. The safety stop at 15 feet was necessary although the safety stops have taken on the role of dance party. On the way back, Dan’s pedal fell off his bike, but Hank was on the spot ready to go, and Dan got a tow back. After lunch, the Fish and Chips and the Crusty Conch’s flip flopped activities. The Conchs went diving at Stubbs to observe different types of fish schooling. Susie took underwater pictures of all of us. We all got a little exercise swimming back, not that we don’t get enough exercise in the morning or anything! On the way back, it started down pouring, and we all put on our wetsuits to keep warm. Back at the Marina, we broke down our equipment as quick as possible and biked back avoiding the broken bikes from the morning. Will said he was going so fast it was like sprinting on a bike, yea, I think we are all a little tired. The Fish and Chips dissected their fish. One group, Miram and Haley thought that they were the first group to find the brain, but really, it was just the other eye. We painted out shirts, and found out that Allie has art talent, and almost majored in art instead of Marine Biology---you made the right choice Allie. Next, we had a lecture, then dinner, and Kaely, Erin, Whitnee, Dan, Jon, Miram, CJ, Elise, Haley, and Danielle got ready for the night dive. We had to wait 20 minutes for the sun set and the night fish to come out. We listened to Daryl’s favorite song, “Stress” (that was one of the extra credits on the midterm) about 7 times, until it was time to go in the water. Everyone was little scared but we pulled it together and got in. We saw a couple eels, a baby turtle that Jon kissed, a parrotfish, and the coolest of all: Bioluminescence. We learned about bioluminescence in one of Oliver’s lectures. We turned off our flashlights and watched it. It was Awesome NOT zesty!. We came up and heard once again, “Stress”.
